Hello, Michelle here 😁. I am a self taught baker and form one half of the Lenton Catering team which I share with my husband Pete.
I was born in the UK but grew up in New Zealand and Australia where I was lucky enough to be surrounded by animals and I always imagined I would end up training as a vet. As I got older I realised that I was far too sensitive to cope with the ‘icky’ side of vet practice.
On leaving school I worked in a bank for a couple of years before taking a job in the reservations department for American Airlines and then Air New Zealand both in North Sydney, for a combined total of 8 years before discovering the hospitality industry.
I lived and worked for a year on South Molle Island Resort in the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia where I learnt the joy of making people happy via hospitality (and learnt the art of being able to party all night and still do a good days work the next day!). My love of hospitality brought me back to the UK in my late 20s where I planned on travelling around Europe but I met my husband in a hotel kitchen and never made it across the Channel!
I worked through a variety of hospitality positions from bartender to restaurant team manager but I left catering for a while to take a position as Office Manager of an IT & Unified Communications company for 8 years. This gave me a good sense of business and honed my administration skills.
We left our respective jobs and moved to Lincolnshire to a derelict windmill in 2014 where we did a full renovation of the coach house next to the mill, and opened our tea room in 2016.
Over the past few years I have become more limited in what I am able to do physically due to a number of conditions which affect my joints and muscles. So as of July 2021 we will be closing our tea room to concentrate on our online Bake Shop, Luxury Cakes, and Event Catering business which will allow me the flexibility to take time out should it be necessary.
Pete is a wonderful Chef and my biggest champion. When I met him 22 years ago (yes I am that old!) I started to take a keen interest in food and discovered the joy of baking. I love both the creative outlet it gives me and the fact that I find it very therapeutic. I can lose myself in the kitchen for hours and Pete is lucky if he gets any sense out of me! We absolutely love making people happy through food.
Our hearts now belong to Lincolnshire, the growers county, and we can’t imagine living anywhere else ♥
